Within the Construction Skills (CITB) Site Safety Plus range of courses is the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, (SSSTS). This range of courses are regarded as being the highest standard of qualification in the construction industry and highly thought of.
The SSSTS training is a 2 day course targeted at site supervisors who deal with day to day Health and Safety issues on-site and are hoping to gain the knowledge and information required to comply with their health and safety responsibilities. The qualification meets the specification detailed within the UKCG (formerly MCG) "Supervisor Training Standard" which is a requirement for all supervisors employed on UKCG members' sites.
Candidates will develop a sound understanding of their legal responsibilities, health and safety issues and the wider welfare and environmental issues in relation to their role. The necessity of promoting and supporting health and safety at work in order to oversee effectively will be highlighted. Individuals currently working as a supervisor or those due to obtain supervisory responsibilities would be fitting candidates for the course.
A broad range of health and safety aspects specific to the role of site manager are taught within the training, as follows: CDM (Construction Design & Management Regulations), Working at Height, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), Manual Handling, Accidents & First Aid and Behaviour & Intervention Skills
To qualify for the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) accreditation, course candidates are required to pass an end of course examination as well as continuous assessment during interactive sessions. Despite certification being valid for five years, it is advised that refresher courses are attended within three years. This is because of the continued development in technology, legislation and environmental management.
Please do not confuse this course with the 5 day SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
The SMSTS training is a 5 day course aimed at site managers, agents and people who are responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling or administering groups of staff and workforce. agents will establish a deeper understanding of the social, moral and legal aspect of their post and learn new strategies in the management of health and safety on site in compliance with up to date legislation.
10,000 people are trained on the SMSTS health and safety course annually. Construction professionals who wish to acquire a site manager role in future, as well as present site managers who would like to review and build upon their knowledge would be well suited to SMSTS training. The Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007 (CDM) requires that all employers of construction workers make certain that they are competent in a range of health and safety issues. The SMSTS course meets this requirement entirely and will qualify individuals with the highest level of training there is.
